Hear what environmentalists are saying about clean, renewable wind energy

Cohocton Wind is estimated to generate enough clean, renewable energy to power approximately 35,000 New York homes per year. All without any air or water pollution and with no greenhouse gases, a leading cause of global warming.

  • No pollution: Wind farms create zero air or water pollution.
  • Reduced use of fossil fuels: The energy to be produced by Cohocton Wind would be equivalent of burning approximately 669,000 barrels of oil or 182,000 tons of coal per year, yet has none of the associated toxicity, health, or cost issues.
  • Fewer emissions: Based on data recently published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (U.S. EPA) Emissions and Generation Resource Integrated Database (E-GRID), traditional Upstate New York generation sources producing an equivalent annual amount of electric energy would emit greenhouse gases (GHG) consisting of nearly 134,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 160 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx). To put this in perspective, 134,000 tons of CO2 is equivalent to the annual emissions of over 23,000 cars or over 16,000 SUVs. In addition, equivalent energy production from traditional sources would produce approximately 680 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2). Both SO2 and NOx cause acid rain, which harms our lakes and rivers.
  • Spaces remain open: Wind farms enable local property owners to capture a new source of clean energy without interfering with their current use of the land, helping to maintain open spaces.
  • Safe for our lakes and rivers: Unlike conventional methods of electricity production, wind power uses no water and emits no mercury, a leading cause of contamination to our rivers and lakes.
